Courtyard by Marriott Stockholm works together with local start-up, Coffeemagic, to create a sustainable body scrub from saved coffee grounds

Instead of throwing their coffee grounds away, Courtyard Stockholm has joined forces with a local start-up, Coffeemagic, to create a natural body scrub. This is a sustainable solution to reduce food waste and extend the life cycle of coffee. The product was released at the beginning of last year and is now available to purchase as a souvenir of guests’ stay in Stockholm.

Sweden is one of the highest coffee consumers in the world, consuming on average 80.1 thousand metric tonnes per year. It is estimated that it takes about 140 litres of water to produce just one cup. Back in 2021, a young student on placement at Courtyard Stockholm, had the idea to reuse coffee grounds and create a unique body scrub. The team was immediately on board and supported the idea by contacting Emilie Loman at Coffeemagic, a local start-up company that takes used coffee grounds, dries them, blends them with natural ingredients and packages them in reusable glass jars.

The scrub includes only 7 natural ingredients; coffee grounds, coconut oil, brown sugar, lactic acid, Vitamin E oil, lavender oil and lemon oil. It has no chemical preservatives and is kind to both animals and the environment. The product is also certified by the Swedish Medical Products Agency. The result is a beautiful body scrub that is the perfect addition to a regular beauty routine.

The team at Courtyard Stockholm are passionate about sustainability. Coffeemagic body scrub is an innovative idea to reduce waste and help them on the way to achieving their sustainability goals, as part of Marriott International’s sustainability & social impact platform, Serve 360.
